Possibly the Bengal is the most notable and rare domestic cat to wear the brown tabby coat. Bengals were originally bred from the Asian Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis bengalensis). there are some wildcats that are about the same size as our domestic cats and also resemble the traditional brown tabby cat. the amur leopard cat, tsushima leopard cat, ocelots and margays are the spitting images of brown tabbies. These wildcats are nearly extinct in their natural habits (mainly Asia, Central and South America), so our brown tabby felis catus is the closest most people will ever get to seeing their true relatives.
The toyger is another unusual brown tabby cat that appears wild. the breed is supposed to have been created by crossing Bengals with a variety of cat breeds. Toygers are believed to have been bred by a woman in the 1980s who imported a cat from India to perfect a diminutive tiger phenotype. Interestingly, it is also believed that the creator of the toyger intended the breed to inspire tiger conservation to increase the numbers of big cats in their natural habitats.

This brown tabby has not only elevated the status of cats in the community and highlighted adoption (and adoption of pets with special needs), but has also raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help pets homeless. Plus, this tabby trailblazer stars in her own movie, I’ll Be Next Door For Christmas! lil bub is so popular that her feature film debut was paved for by individual donors through online crowdfunding. that’s an impressive resume for a kitten born to community cats.
